Native Woodland Strategy 2026

Date: Thursday March 19th 2026
Time: 1pm - 2pm

As part of the ongoing consultation process for developing an updated Native Woodland Strategy for 2026-2030 and following the online questionnaire phase completed in January, this webinar will look at two perspectives on the strategy.

Fintan Kelly from the Environmental Pillar will be discussing “What the Environmental Pillar is doing to inform the design of the NRP (Nature Restoration Plan).

Declan Cooke from Inland Fisheries Ireland will discuss “A strategy for protective tree cover in catchments from an Inland Fisheries Ireland perspective”.

This is the first of a series of webinars to complement the Native Woodland Strategy 2026-2030 consultation process.

Previously, Woodlands of Ireland, in conjunction with a range of public and private-sector stakeholders, had developed a 5-year native woodland strategy for the period 2016 to 2020, which is now overdue for an update. You can view this document here: A Strategy for Native Woodlands in Ireland 2016-2020.

The Native Woodland Strategy 2026-2030 endeavours to include an outline of how some of the woodland targets of the EU Nature Restoration Regulation may be achieved.

“The EU Nature Restoration Regulation is the first continent-wide, comprehensive law of its kind. It is a key element of the EU Biodiversity Strategy, which sets binding targets to restore degraded ecosystems, in particular those with the most potential to capture and store carbon and to prevent and reduce the impact of natural disasters.” - European Commission.

Native Tree Seed Collection Webinars

  • Woodlands of Ireland (WoI) in conjunction with the National Parks and Wildlife Service and the Forest Service of the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine ran some webinars on the topic of Native Irish Tree Seed Collection in 2021. The webinars arose out of discussions from the Woodlands of Ireland Technical Advisory Panel (TAP) group meetings. The TAP groups are made up of key expert individuals who provide technical expertise and guidance on specific matters or projects. The Seed Collection and Sustainable Plant Production group addresses issues relating to native tree seed collection, forest reproductive material (FRM), seed collection permits, and tree nurseries.
