Realising Quality Wood from Ireland's Native Woodlands - Silvicultural

Guidelines for Wood Production in the Context of the Native Woodland Scheme.

Authors: Dr Declan Little & Dr John Cross.

This publication provides guidance to practitioners and landowners on how to achieve quality wood whilst addressing the overriding objective of the Native Woodland Scheme (NWS), i.e. biodiversity maintenance and enhancement. It assesses six of our native trees including sessile and pedunculate oak, ash, birch, alder and hazel using the NWS management framework document and providing economic projections over the rotations involved. The management plans and economic details are on an accompanying CD-ROM inserted into the back cover of the publication.

Semi-natural Woodlands – Seed stands

Woodlands of Ireland are supporting the Forest Service and COFORD in the establishment of a national catalogue of seed stands specifically for seed collections for the Native Woodland Scheme. This is to ensure a continuous supply of native tree and shrub planting stock locally and regionally throughout Ireland in future. Allowing seed collections to take place in privately-owned woodlands will contribute towards the appropriate management and expansion of the native woodland resource. If you or anyone you know has a native/semi-natural woodland and wishes for it to be considered for inclusion in this database please contact Declan Little at the address below.

Heritage Council Forest Policy Review: Consultants Report

On behalf of the Heritage Council, Woodlands of Ireland co-ordinated a wide ranging review of current Heritage Council forest policy to reflect the changing context of forestry and to provide a vision for the future development of forestry in Ireland, with a particular emphasis on the national heritage. The review was contracted to a collaborative team with a broad spectrum of forestry-related expertise. After consultation with stakeholders in the general public the team produced a report which was presented to the Woodlands of Ireland Steering Committee in 2008. It was subsequently presented to the Board of the Heritage Council which is deliberating on its content. For more information, please see the consultants report
